陳黎是八十年代台灣最突出的中堅代詩人之一。這本《親密書》選錄了他一九七四至一九九二年間代表性詩作七十餘首，在不同的題材中透露詩人一貫對土地與生命的愛戀，對體制與僵硬形式的反抗，對日常卑微事物的歌讚；在充滿創意與機智的詩句中散發動人的熱情與悲憫。
詩人余光中說陳黎「頗擅用西方的詩藝來處理台灣的主題，不但乞援於英美，更能取法於拉丁美洲，以成就他今日『粗中有細、獷而兼柔』的獨特風格」。

Chen Li is one of the best representatives of contemporary Chinese poetry in Taiwan. A winner of many important prizes of poetry in his country, he has written more than six books of poetry, and has translated, with his wife Chang Fen-ling, works of many prominent poets -- such as Plath Larkin, Heaney, Neruda, Paz, Szymborska -- into Chinese. He subtly combines in his poetry the elements of Western modernism and post-modernism with the merits of Oriental poetics and the Chinese language. In this book, Intimate Letters, Chang Fen - ling has translated over one hundred of Chen Li’s poems into English, showing us the many facets of a poet who humbly and incessantly seeks to find balance between art and life, suffering and joy, dream and reality. Writing poetry to him is a way to communicate with the world, and each poem is, in some sense, an ’intimate letter’ to the world.
